Join us for Harvest Fest on October 28th, a zero-waste potluck and festival

Join us for a community pop-up kitchen October 28th.  We will have a grinding mill onsite if you have things you want to turn into flour like corn, beans, grain.  We will have our fire pit going and be cooking food.  It is a great way to celebrate fall and the harvest and help the community process food together.  Looking forward to a wonderful evening together!  Transylvania Shares will be onsite sharing their stuff and answering questions on their sharing library! This is a potluck.  Please bring a dish to share if you are able and your own non-disposable place setting.  We strive to be waste free.

Prepared Vegan and Vegetarian Holiday treat by a local Chef

Our Eating Consciously group did a survey awhile ago asking if there was a demand for prepared vegan meals in our community. The answer was Absolutely! Cup and Saucer has since added delicious plant-based meals to their menu and they are a favorite spot for me when I am looking for a meal in Brevard. We wanted to share another opportunity we have learned about. Whistlestop Market is offering a locally prepared vegan or vegetarian Wellington for the holidays. We have put our order in for a vegan version with the vegan gravy. We will be sharing it during our Thanksgiving day potluck at the Canteen. We appreciate Val offering this version and look forward to supporting her and enjoying the meal! If you would like to order, send Whistlestop an email at [email protected].

Pisgah Collective Harvest Festival. Want to help move it to zero-waste?

We love Pisgah Collective. They provide a loving nature-filled environment for our communities’ children. We are certainly bound to them with love and similar visions. Althea has reached out and asked if we want to be a part of their Harvest Festival. Here is what she shared when I asked how we could help, “We are hoping for this to be a community event with fun kid activities, local vendors, possibly music. I was thinking moving to conservers could help manage a waste/compost station and/or have some sort of demonstration or class. Honestly, we are up for anything!!” Please let us know if you can help. We would love to be a part of their celebration. Just reply to this email if you want to help.

Moving to Conservers and Compost services

It is amazing how much is going on in John’s and my life in regards to reuse and eliminating waste. Earlier this year we advertised for 3 compost positions. One was to work with Rise and Shine to set up and manage a compost program. The second was for a pick up and drop off service and the third was to work with households in our community who want to compost and want a service to help. Rise and Shine now has a paid position managing their compost and community garden! The position was filled in the summer. The student hired for the job has moved on to start her studies. It was perfect timing. When we worked with Rise and Shine regarding the position we had someone who was starting in September so the summer employee who helped get it underway was a perfect fit. We have learned as a group how composting at home can significantly reduce the amount of garbage we send to the landfill. [...]
