Join us this Thursday for a zero-waste potluck and to celebrate the soft opening of Transylvania Shares! After months of planning, rolling up our sleeves and cleaning and stocking our new fantastic location, it is time for us to start sharing! How exciting!!! Thanks to everyone who pledged and help us make this a possibility! We are located at 10771 Greenville Highway, Cedar Mountain in the Cedar Mountain Canteen. We will be gathering at 6 pm! If able, please bring a dish to share and your own non-disposable place setting and beverage glass. All are welcome to join us and dine with us even if you don’t have a dish to share. We’ve got you covered. We are looking forward to celebrating the creation of a new business in our community that helps reduce consumption and our impact on the environment. What a super fantastic community we live in!
This year, Moving to Conservers is hosting a series of classes on moving to zero-waste. The classes are held the first Thursday of every month. Each month has a theme and this month’s theme is Sharing. We picked this theme for January to coincide with the opening of the new sharing club Transylvania Shares! Transylvania Shares will have a soft-opening on January 16th and we are hosting our potluck at Cedar Mountain Canteen to celebrate. The Shares’ inventory is there and we will be pitching in and helping them with some volunteer labor. We will be hosting our next potluck there on January 9th to pitch in as well. Please join us. We had a wonderful educational class and potluck January 2nd where James, a board member for Transylvania Shares, led a discussion on the club. There were a lot of questions and suggestions and a small display of some of the items the club intends to make available. Here is a list of a few of the [...]
I hear it all the time, “I want to do something to make change, but I don’t know what to do.” I also have heard many times, “I am just one person, how could I really make change?” Many years ago I experienced something that changed my entire outlook on those thoughts and questions. It changed my life. I was on my way to work in rush hour traffic. It was February and freezing. I think the windchill was in the teens. I was sitting at a red light in front of a grade school and one block away from a high school. It was a very busy and confusing intersection with 5 entry points. I look around and saw a small child waiting at the cross walk with a parka on. It was so big, the child’s head was buried so deep in the hood, I could barely see his face. It was early and I knew the crossing guard would not be on duty for at [...]
We are excited to announce our new educational series. On the first Thursday of the month, we will be meeting at WolfBrew Bottle Shop for a zero-waste potluck and class on ways to move to zero-waste. Our first class will be an introduction to Transylvania Shares, the new lending library in our community. Meet the board members and learn about this exciting new community resource.

Carbon taxes are talked about a lot when people are brainstorming ways to reduce their footprint. I was actually in Canada many years ago on the first day they started charging a carbon tax at the gas pump. I didn't completely understand the concept at the time but I did know it was a big deal. It was interesting to be there during that time. Moving to Conservers has been working for the past two years to build community and support each other as we learn new ways to live with less impact. Through study, conversation and local action, many of us have made personal changes and also helped groups we are connected to make similar changes. One of our biggest undertakings was helping Motown Memories, a 200-plate dinner fundraiser for Rise and Shine, move to zero-waste. It was an amazing event and it started a lot of requests from folks to use the dishes we had acquired. Matter of fact, since that event in March, we have [...]
Transylvania Shares is moving along swiftly, thanks to Ed’s guidance. Thank you Ed! There is a lot to plan before opening our Sharing cooperative and we are getting close. We are very excited. Interested in getting involved? Let us know. WE would love your help.
A friend recently mentioned a book she read, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I have made a goal to read more so I went to the library and checked it out. Robin is a scientist, a Distinguished Teaching Professional of Environmental Biology and a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. The book compares the scientific communities views on biology to those of her nation. It talks about the community between plants and humans and how they have evolved. It talks about the honor and gratitude they have for each other. She talks about going out in the Spring to harvest leeks. She uses a hand trowel instead of a shovel. While a shovel would make quick work of the harvest it would also shorten her time in the woods. She says, “Not everything should be convenient.” Indeed. In our convenience economy that is a soothing message to hear, more as a form of reinforcement than a new message for me. My husband John and I have changed [...]
