James shares his ideas about a sharing cooperative

Wow is there a lot of interest in creating a local sharing cooperative! James, who is the person who told me about Asheville’s Tool Shed, a sharing non-profit, has shared some great suggestions towards the creation of our local cooperative. Here is what he shared: The quickest and lowest cost way to grow this idea would probably be to start with a members only sharing library, from there we could grow the idea or work to form a new business. #1 Items could be listed online. *all monatary transactions could be done via the Moving Conservers website using PayPal. *or it could operate as Cash Only  #2 use storage units for holding shared items (Brevard location & Cedar Mountain location)  #3 have 4-5 key holders per location (key holders are compensated for time spent handling the pickup and return of items)  Some other thoughts 1. having a members only club not open to the general public would limit liability  2. members will take better care of rental items [...]

Help us start our sharing club

It is nice to share. We have learned that reuse is key to moving to a zero-waste household and community. John and I have a collection of amazing gear. We use to own a bike and kayak shop in West Virginia and as a result, we have collected quite a bit. We offer it to folks all the time. Many are reluctant to borrow it and we get that. Other communities have set up sharing organizations to formalize arrangements, which seems to remove most of the reluctance. Recently, since Moving to Conservers helped Motown Memories become a zero-waste event, community members have contacted us and donated items to the group so that others can use them. We are getting quite the collection of household items, tools, and such. So the question is, how do we get from where we are now to a sharing solution that works for our community? We are pursuing answers to that question now. Have thought and ideas? Please send them our way. We [...]

The Sharing Book

Thanks to Torry for sharing his book, Sharing Solutions!  We can study this book as a group so we can decide what to do with all our dishware.  For now, we are taking requests and joyfully sharing with folks who ask to borrow our wares.  Let us know if you are interested in learning and helping us move our stash to a community sharing resource.  We would love your help!

Our Sharing Library and Food Scrap Diversion work is going strong in our community!

Our Sharing Library and Food Scrap Diversion work is going strong in our community! Another step towards a zero-waste community! Moving to Conservers has an inventory of donated items given to us to promote re-use and zero-waste. Currently we have dishes, complete sets of china and lots of silverware. Folks are borrowing it and we are so happy! They are also asking if we have a home for the food scraps they collect at their event! Yes! We do we say! As we start looking at ways to make our sharing library a permanent part of our community please feel free to ask to use our items. If you have food scraps as a result of your event and are looking for a home for them (other than the landfill) please let us know. We are happy to help!
