Growing soil, feeding our community family

Five years ago at this time, John and I were not cutting seed potatoes getting them ready to plant on St. Patrick's Day. We were not adding coffee grounds from the local cafe to our compost facility. We did have a small compost pile but we were not working it. Now it is a part-time job for John. Well, maybe not but my husband makes a darn good soil, something I would not have appreciated five years ago. I didn’t think much about soil. I have gardened for years but didn’t understand the value of good [...]

Evan Parker’s talk on plant-based diets was awesome. Thanks to all who attended.

What a great gathering!  We enjoyed a wonderful zero-waste, mostly plant-based potluck with lots of new faces and lots of familiar ones.  It was fantastic.  Evan shared information about the sustainability of plant-based diets.  He took questions after he wrapped up his talk and I learned a bit and enjoyed hearing the questions from others.  Many thanks to Evan and all who made it possible, a special thank you to WolfBrew Bottle shop for their continued hospitality, and thanks to the NAACP for letting us borrow their PA system.  Next month's topic in on using [...]

Motown Memories is going zero-waste again and we need help

Last year, Motown Memories fundraiser went zero-waste and as a result we now have Transylvania Shares sharing club in our community.  They have asked if we will make the event zero-waste again and we said, "You bet!" We need help.  The event is April 25th from 6 - 10 pm and we have a few tasks we still need filled.  Families are welcome and encouraged.  We love teaching folks how to move to zero-waste.  Please email Kim at [email protected] or call 828-966-5367 for more information.  Thanks!

Fantastic educational gathering where we learned about plant-based diets

What a great evening.  Noel and Patrick put together information for us to consider regarding a plant-based diet and the effects our food has on us and our community.  The place was packed and it was wonderful to see so many new faces.  The food was fantastic as always.  I personally loved all the vegan food and enjoyed trying different dishes.  I especially enjoyed the brownies.  Yum!  Thanks to all who attended.  It was amazing to spend time with such members of our wonderful community!

You are welcome to join our potlucks even if you don’t bring food or your own place setting.

At a recent gathering we talked about ways to make our events more family-friendly. Several ideas were shared and we also heard that some folks don’t attend because they don’t have a dish to share. Work and other obligations can make it difficult for folks to prepare a dish to share, especially on a weeknight. We always offer help to community members in our newsletter and what better way to help a neighbor than to feed them and share a meal together? Please feel free to join us even if you don’t have food to share [...]
