Maureen needs help at the Blue Zone Project Kick-Off

Maureen sent this request for help and we wanted to pass it along. Blue Zone project is having their big kick-off event on Aug 22nd from 10 to 1.  They are going to be having a series of booths in their parking lot where they are giving out info etc.  Sort of a small Farmers Market...same social distancing precautions etc. I have volunteered to man the garden booth where they will be giving out seeds for fall planting... kale, spinach, arugula and I think they are getting some plant starts from Gaia to also give away (kale, chard, collards, broccoli, cabbage).  I'm wondering if there is anyone from the Conservers who would like to come and help man the booth with me?  Can you put out the word and see if anyone feels comfortable doing this.  We will have spacing between booths, masks required, hand sanitizer. Thanks Maureen If you are interested in helping, please let Maureen know by emailing her at [email protected] Thanks!

Help us give away plants with the Hunger Coalition again and help those in need grow their own food

The Hunger Coalition and Moving to Conservers are working together again to give away plants this fall for those who are food insecure.  Here is a note Gail Kinard from the Hunger Coalition shared: Hi Everyone, Shane and I are organizing a fall plant give-away at an upcoming Hunger Coalition food distribution.  The spring plant give-away was extremely successful, and some people are still asking for plants at the distribution so we're hoping that the fall distribution will be just as good! Ideally, we would get the plants distributed in early August, but I'm not sure we can get everything together by then, so it looks like it might be Sept. 3rd. Shane and I are going to talk through some of the details tomorrow, but she has already gotten a commitment from Kate at Gaia to once again donate plant starts.  We're thinking of focusing on four or five different fall crops.  We will still need pots and soil, and volunteers to help pot the starts. Barbara Grimm's husband [...]

Davidson River School needs help getting their garden ready for students

We received this email from Barbara Grimm, the principal at Davidson River School.  Interested in helping?  Email and let her know. Hey everyone, since COVID, William and I have been working hard to beautify the Davidson River Campus. We have raised beds with fresh vegetables and a beautiful pollinator garden behind our picnic shed. We are also working to build a greenhouse out of recycled materials to begin growing food hydroponically. My intention is to create something beautiful and life-sustaining for our students to come back to. I am at the place where I could use a bit more help and wanted to invite anyone interested to meet at the school on Thursday, July 30th at 5:00, Rain date is Tuesday, August 4th. I still need to do some weeding , outlining beds, spreading mulch and planting new plants. We may also be at a point where we need help with the greenhouse. I promise there is enough space and areas that we don't have to be right [...]

A video about NC industrial hog farms and what their neighbors endure. Let’s meet Naeema!

Recently, we kicked off a project called Eating Consciously.  We have 4 community members with a variety of expertise who have stepped up to help us understand the impact our food choices have on others and ways to move from those choices if we so desire.  It is something John and I were curious about and appreciate having so much support as we learn and adapt to change our habits that harm others.  We thought others may be interested in the same journey and it didn't take long until a team was put together to help us study together. Above is a video about industrial hog farms in North Carolina.  It was eye-opening for us. We are excited to announce that Naeema Muhammad, Organizing Director, NC Environmental Justice Network has agreed to an interview for our Eating Consciously podcast! Before the interview, we wanted to reach out to the community and get your feedback.  What would you like to ask Naeema?  What format do you think [...]

Eating Consciously – as we eat at home more our food scraps increase. Your scraps can help us feed our neighbors

For years, Moving to Conservers has worked to change what we define as waste and trash, especially when it comes to food.  Reducing food waste is considered one of the number one things we can do to increase the health of our environment.  Diverting food scraps to farms helps them feed our local community. For some articles on the topic and ways you can use or let others use your food scraps go here:  https://movingtoconservers.com/category/composting/

One dollar gives a hungry person something to eat. So please open your hearts … and wallets

A few weeks ago Kim wrote a very informative note about the free lunches Rooster Head Plantation is serving to the children and adults in our community in need of a meal. The note encouraged donations from members of Moving to Conservers. I was curious about what the response was to this donations request so I contacted Jacqui at the Farm. Well, the response was disappointing so let’s see if we can do better! The Farm started the meals on March 18th and has served every Wednesday-Saturday except for one Wednesday when the farm flooded. Jacqui and her volunteers serve anywhere from 48-125 lunches a week. Weather seems to dictate. The cost of preparing these free bag lunches averages $1 a day. It is very easy to donate: 1. One can stop by the Farm and give cash or a check. Plus while there, do some shopping of local and regional foods, fruits and vegetables. 2. I live far from the farm so I send a check to [...]

Amazing things are happening around our homemade Black Lives Matter sign

It is amazing.  It was so simple and has made such a difference.  After George Floyd was murdered John and I painted a sheet and hung it from our garage.  We had to do something.  We never expected what happened as a result of that sign.  I don't know why we didn't.  I always cringe when I know my black family members are coming for a visit because of the confederate flags they are going to pass to get to our home. Why had we never hung a sign of support for black lives, and our LGBTQ family and friends?  I can tell you, we will always hang flags of support from now on.  Our home has changed.  Our world has broadened and the number of diverse faces in our yard and around our home has become visible.  Almost daily, a vehicle slows, a smiling face reveals itself and a hand waves.  It brings me to tears of sincere joy and gratitude. Last week a car of young [...]

Kim and John Receive Well-Deserved Recognition

Our own Kim Coram and John Wiseman were recently honored as recipients of the N.C. Governor’s Volunteer Award, along with seven other awardees in Transylvania County. In addition, they were recognized as Medallion Award winners for 2020. Medallion Award winners represent the 20-25 most outstanding volunteers statewide so this is a very special recognition. Kim and John have been actively involved in positive change in the community since they moved here several years ago. As noted in the Transylvania Times “Many people impact their communities, but Coram and Wiseman’s commitment to local action is unparalleled in our county as it crosses multiple organizations, social groups, and causes.” Many of us who have worked with Kim and John have seen this commitment and dedication to positive social change first-hand. Rob Slover, one of those who nominated Kim and John for the recognition noted “ Kim and John are focused on making the world a better place through living their lives as an example.” Well said and so true! Congratulations [...]

Moving to a plant-based diet

In 2020, we kicked off our Moving to Zero-waste educational series.  Our first conversation in January was focused on Transylvania Shares, a new mutual aid organization in our community that shares stuff. February and March focused on the benefits of a plant-based diet.  Thanks to a wonderful presentation from Noel and Patrick in February and another presentation from Evan in March, we received a great education and a lot to think about. Since the stay-at-home order due to COVID 19 was issued shortly thereafter, we did not have our gathering where we had a conversation about our studies.  Nonetheless, people have reached out and said they would like support to reduce the amount of meat in their diets.  Fantastic. I reached out and asked Shane, a vegan and owner of GreenGo Cleaning Company, and a huge supporter of zero-waste and community if she would mind guiding us.  She said she would.  Thank you Shane!  Look for her tips on our website and in our newsletter. We will host [...]

We have always been about equity and solidarity.

Update on June 16, 2020 I posted this several weeks ago.  I continue to publish it for those who may have missed it.  I also continue to post it because my granddaughter is still expressing her fear.  Good for her.  We are enjoying a visit with them this week while we social distance in our home and wear masks and wash our hands a lot.  We have chalkboards in our home on doors and such and yesterday, my granddaughter wrote on one of them: I'm scared for my black family's life.  Black Lives Matter. I shouldn't be scared because I am 10. What wisdom.  What is happening now is amazing in so many ways.  I feel hope.  I also deeply feel the grief our family is experiencing.  Best friends have left, family members don't understand and it brings others to their knees.  It is a deep wound, exposed and while it helps move to healing, the grief is incapacitating at times.  It is why I was unable to [...]
