We need a compost management service in Transylvania County

Compost, compost, compost compost!  A day rarely goes by when John and I don't receive a request to help someone with their compost.  We are currently working to accommodate three different compost requests. First, folks are asking if we can pick up their food scraps. Second, folks are asking if we can help them set up their own compost bin and help maintain it. Third, we are working with an organization to help them set-up an onsite compost facility so they can divert food scraps from the landfill. Awareness of the value of composting is definitely on the rise.  We need help. How can you help?  Sign up with Share Waste. Do you want food scraps?  We need more places to take food scraps.  If you would like more scraps for your compost system, please let us know.  Even better, sign up on the Share Waste app and let folks know! Do you want your scraps picked up?  Sign up on the Share Waste app and let folks [...]

Need a Country Living motorized Grain Mill with corn auger? A Transylvania Shares member has one!

John and I have been growing our own food as long as we have lived here.  Every year things get easier.  Recently we have been focusing on growing grains and making meals.  This year, through our seed exchange, we were able to get some corn seeds for meal and grits.  What we don't have is a grain mill.  Now we don't need one because we can share one being made available by a Transylvania Shares member.  He also has a food dehydrator available.  Thanks so much for sharing! Here are his descriptions of the items available and conditions for use. Country Living motorized Grain Mill with corn auger: This is a steel burr mill capable of grinding coarse (grits) to fine (corn meal) to ultra fine (flour). The corn auger accessory allows for the grinding of any sized grain, from small Amaranth to large corn kernels, wheats, oats, even beans. The mill is accessorized with a measured hopper and a food-grade bin with lid. It cannot grind wet [...]

Let’s get together for a meal and enjoy each other’s company

This Thursday we are hosting a zero-waste potluck at the Cedar Mountain Canteen on June 24th at 6 pm.  This will be a low-key gathering.  We will enjoy a potluck and bring back our zero-waste tips clothesline.  What is that?  Folks have shared their ideas about how to move to zero waste by creating a flag that we hang on a clothesline.  You can read suggestions from others and create your own flag to add to the line.  We provide the material scraps and the markers.  It is a fun way to share. All are welcome.  Please bring a covered dished to share if you are able.  If not, please join us.  We would love to feed you.  Please bring your own non-disposable place setting too.  Plant-based meals are encouraged.  All food is welcome.  We have had so many delicious plant-based meals.  It is an amazing meal. Looking forward to sharing a meal together.

Our gathering with Leif was wonderful. Thanks everyone for an amazing meal and loving friendship

Leif Olsen treated us to an incredible discussion about mycology.  Wow, the stuff is everywhere, thank goodness.  We had an amazing turnout and the food was divine.  Thank you Leif for sharing your time and knowledge and thanks to everyone who shared their time and delicious goodies.  Over 40 people enjoying the evening and our trash can didn't even notice.  Thanks everyone for supporting zero-waste events.  It is so kind to not leave a lot of garbage for folks to clean up.

Help Wanted: $20 an hour. Compost service demand is exceeding our ability!

We need help!  We have more demand for composting services than we can handle.  We are looking for someone to help us increase composting in the county.  We have about 6 - 8 hours of work a week, some flexible hours.  We can provide all the training.  If you are interested, please let us know.  We would love to help someone start their own company and help provide services we can't keep up with.  You can email us at [email protected] or call at 304-482-3062.  Thanks! Kim & John

Our gathering with Mountaintrue at the Cedar Mountain Canteen was fabulous.

We had our first gathering of 2021 June 3rd at the Cedar Mountain Canteen with a presentation from Anna of Mountaintrue and learned how to be good neighbors to the Little River, which is beside our beer garden.  It was magical seeing everyone together for the first time in over a year.  The food was fantastic and it was a joyous occasion. We learned the results of our first water test in the Little River and it was excellent!  Thanks to everyone who joined us.  It was wonderful to be together again.
